위대했던 적이 있었지
옳은 것을 위해서 일어섰고
도덕을 위해서 투쟁했지
도덕적인 이유로 법을 만들기도
폐지하기도 했었지
가난을 물리치려고도 했지만, 가난한 사람이랑 싸운건 아냐
희생도 하고, 이웃을 걱정했었지
신념을 위해서 돈을 모금 했고
그런걸로 자랑 따위는 하지않았어
위대한 것들을 이뤘지 엄청난 과학적 발전도 이뤘고
우주를 탐사하고, 질병도 치료했어
세계적인 예술가들도 길러냈고
세계 최고의 경제도 이룩했어
우린 별을 향해 전진했지, 인간답게 행동했고
우리는 지성을 열망했고 우습게 여기지 않았어
그렇다고 열등한 존재가 되는건 아니거든
지난 선거에 누구에게 투표했는지
그런걸로 자신을 평가하지않았어
쉽게 겁을 먹지도 않았고
우리가 이렇게까지 할 수 있었던 이유는
우리에게 정보가 있었기 때문이지
위대하고 존경받는 사람들의 지식
문제를 해결하는 가장 첫번째 방법은
문제가 있다는걸 인식하는 거야

We sure used to be.
We stood up for what was right.
We fought for moral reasons.
We passed laws,
struck down laws for moral reasons.
We waged wars on poverty, not poor people.
We sacrificed. We cared about our neighbors.
We put our money
where our mouths were and we never beat our chest.
We built great big things, made ungodly technological advances,
explored the universe, cured diseases,
and we cultivated
the world's greatest artists and the world's greatest economy.
We reached for the stars, acted like men.
We aspired to intelligence. We didn't belittle it.
It didn't make us feel inferior.
We didn't identify ourselves
by who we voted for in the last election
and we didn't- we didn't scare so easy.
we were able to be all these things and do all these things
because we were informed.
By great men, men who were revered.
The first step in solving any problem
is recognizing there is one.
